Chris Hamilton and I tried to guess the ER bills for injuries from Home Alone. We were way off.
My producer, Nathaniel, surprised us with this game for the holiday episode of Last Month In Healthcare. Nathaniel quizzed Chris and me on the 2025 national averages for uninsured (cash) pricing for the Wet Bandits' worst moments. We tried to predict the cost of:
- Marv taking a nail to the foot
- Harry's third-degree scalp burn from the blowtorch
- The iron to the face
The wild part? We actually overshot most of the estimates.
It turns out that when you look at the uninsured cash price (versus the inflated insurance price), the numbers are surprisingly different than what two industry veterans expected. It highlights just how disconnected the perceived value of healthcare is from the actual cost.
