I can honestly say that the interviews and conversations that Spencer has had on this show have changed my career 👍

Spencer Smith’s Self-Funded podcast is smart, sharp, and actually fun to listen to. He knows his stuff and brings on guests who do too. If you’re in benefits, this one should already be in your rotation… it’s really good.

Having had the privilege of spending time with Marshall Allen at an event in New England, I was already inspired by his powerful message and unwavering commitment to truth and transparency. We stayed connected via LinkedIn, and like many others, I was looking forward to seeing him speak at the thINk360 conference in Washington, D.C. in 2024. When I arrived and saw his table set up with his books, I was full of anticipation. But halfway through the day, we learned he wouldn’t be attending—and in that moment, I truly felt the weight of his absence. It became clear just how deeply he had touched my life and the lives of so many others in this movement for fairness, honesty, and above all, humanity. His legacy is profound, and his impact will continue to echo far into the future. This episode stands out as my absolute favorite. It’s moving, meaningful, and a testament to the lasting influence of someone who dedicated his life to doing what’s right. Thank you, Spencer Smith, for continuing to create space for these vital conversations—and a special thank you to Sonja Allen for allowing us all to honor Marshall’s work and memory through this platform. He does a special job taking a complicated topic and breaking in down to digestible bites (especially for simple folks like myself). Spencer lives in a world that many people, even professionals in the employee benefits space, do not understand. He uses subject matter experts to help him explain and educate listeners in a clear and engaging way. If you’re in HR, finance, or employee benefits I would highly recommend listening to this podcast.

If you’re new to self-funding or just looking for someone to guide you through the latest trends, point solutions or mechanics of self funding, then this is a must listen!! Spencer does an amazing job of peeling back the layers of what is often dismissed as “too complicated” or only “for bigger plans”. If you want great employee retention, a sustainable solution and transparency, seriously consider a move to self funding.

I got into the industry about a year and a half ago and I learned a lot from just watching Spencer’s YouTube videos. Since then I’ve started listening to the podcasts and they are very well done - professional, lively and even at times entertaining. The chosen guests are fantastic and provide a basic understanding of some complex health insurance topics which is perfect for people of all experience levels. Highly recommended!
